Contemporary cabinetry

Horizontal wood grain slab fronts under a dark stone countertop, with a glass mosaic backsplash and under cabinet lighting.

Slab fronts are unforgiving, which is exactly why they look the way they do. With no frame or profile to hide behind, everything depends on consistent gaps and a grain that runs the way it should across a whole run.

Laying the wood grain horizontally pulls the eye along the kitchen rather than up it, which suits a long galley run and makes a narrow room feel wider than it is.

A dark stone countertop is the right partner for a busy grain. It gives the eye somewhere to rest, and in a kitchen with this much visual texture that matters more than adding another pattern.

The mosaic backsplash only works because of the under cabinet lighting. Glass tile is largely dead without a light source raking across it, so budget for the lighting at the same time as the tile rather than treating it as an extra.
